1. Policy Statement & Scope
Step To It Academy is a performing arts school committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children (under 18) and adults with care and support needs. This policy applies to all teaching staff, choreographers, guest artists, volunteers, administrators, parents/carers, and anyone involved in the delivery of our classes, rehearsals, performances, workshops, and exams.
2. Legal Framework
This policy is underpinned by UK statutory guidance including: 'Working Together to Safeguard Children' (2023), 'Keeping Children Safe in Education' (2025), Children Act 1989 & 2004, the Care Act 2014, and the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006.
3. Our Commitments
Step To It Academy will:
- Provide a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
- Promote early intervention and respond promptly to concerns.
- Conduct safer recruitment including enhanced DBS checks.
- Appoint a trained Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
- Provide safeguarding training to all staff.
- Work in partnership with parents, local authorities, and professionals.
4. Roles and Responsibilities
staff must:
- Follow this policy and the academy's Code of Conduct. (Section 6)
- Attend safeguarding training annually.
- Report any concerns or incidents to the DSL.
- Be vigilant during rehearsals, one-to-one coaching, and backstage.
- Ensure all physical contact (e.g. dance/acro correction) is appropriate and consent-based.
5. Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
The DSL for Step To It Academy is: Darren Massey
Responsibilities include:
- Acting as the main contact for safeguarding concerns.
- Referring cases to local authorities or the police.
- Maintaining confidential records.
- Ensuring policy compliance and staff awareness.
6. Code of Conduct for Staff
DO:
- Be professional, respectful, and inclusive.
- Use appropriate language and physical contact.
- Communicate clearly and at the right level for the child.
- Respect privacy in dressing rooms and ensure supervision is appropriate.
DO NOT:
- Engage in one-to-one contact in isolated spaces.
- Take photos/videos without written parental consent.
- Share personal contact information with students.
- Shout, threaten, or use inappropriate humour or behaviour.
7. Photography and Filming
Images of students will only be taken with prior written consent from parents/carers. Photography during shows or rehearsals must be pre-approved by the DSL and comply with our data protection and safeguarding policy.
8. First Aid and Accidents
First aid should be administered by trained staff with another adult present where possible. All injuries must be recorded and reported to parents/carers. Emergency services must be called if required.
9. Data Protection
Personal data will be handled in compliance with GDPR. Data is only used for administration, emergency contact, medical needs, and event communication.
10. Allegations and Reporting Procedures
Concerns about a child or allegation against a staff member must be reported to the DSL immediately. Where necessary, concerns will be referred to the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO).
11. Review of Policy
This policy will be reviewed annually or following any safeguarding incident or legal change.
